Sage Outpatient and Day Neuro Program is pleased to announce the launch of our Stroke Support Group! The inaugural monthly support group was held Tuesday, February 11, 2020. The goal of the new group is to build a community of stroke survivors and caregivers to learn about stroke and living a healthy lifestyle, share experiences, advice or concerns, provide emotional support, and become inspired to move forward in life after stroke. Each month’s group will focus on a different area of interest with guest speakers or presentations. Some of the topics we will discuss are Work, Driving, Adaptive Gardening, Hunting/Fishing, Healthy Eating and Lifestyle, Aphasia and Communication, and Travel.
Peer Mentor Program
In our first group, we talked about the importance of community as part of successful stroke recovery and began to build our Peer Mentor Program. This program is available to any survivors or caregivers regardless if you are currently in therapy or years post. In addition to having relationships with medical professionals, such as your doctor and therapists, having a community of individuals who have walked in similar shoes and survived similar journeys provides a valuable perspective. Those that are in the trenches every day are really the ones who can truly understand and relate to your unique experience. With our Peer Mentorship Group, we will partner you with someone from a similar path to exchange contact information and develop a relationship. In addition to the support group, we will host several community outings for our peer group throughout the year such as going to the movies or dinner. Get back to the things you love within the safety of a group who understands the challenges that everyday life brings.
First Group Recap
We were host to 20 stroke survivors and caregivers ranging from new stroke to years post. Several shared their personal experiences and goals for a healthy 2020. We broke into small groups and discussed personal concerns or experiences on botox injections for spasticity management, the transition from inpatient to outpatient, and caregiver experiences.
Upcoming Group
Next month’s group is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2020. The topic is “Return to the Outdoors.” Our speaker will be from Trinity Outdoors Disabled Adventures, a nonprofit organization that enables people with disabilities to experience the outdoors. Some of their recent adventures include alligator hunting deer hunting and fishing excursions.
Sage Outpatient and Day Neuro Program is honored to host this support group and be a safe space for individuals to build community. Upcoming topics will be Return to the Outdoors, Adaptive Equipment for home, work, or school, Family Dynamics Post Stroke, and Communicating in Life After Stroke. The Stroke Support Group will be held every 2nd Tuesday, from 12:15 pm – 1:15 pm at our Outpatient Clinic, located at 8313 Picardy Ave, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. We hope to see you there!
